Let’s live in peace and embrace diversity

May there be peace in the heavens, peace in the atmosphere, peace on the earth. Let there be coolness in the water, healing in the herbs and peace radiating from the trees. Let there be harmony in the planets and in the stars, and perfection in eternal knowledge. May everything in the universe be at peace. Let peace pervade everywhere, at all times. May I experience that peace within my own heart.
- Yajurveda

The term 'peace' originates most recently from the Anglo-French ‘pes’, and the Old French ‘pais’, both meaning "peace, reconciliation, silence, agreement". All the religions in the world advocate peace. Before thinking for world peace, at first we must focus on the term inner peace. Because inner peace is what we need at first in order to achieve peace in the world. Inner peace or peace of mind refers to a state of being mentally and spiritually at peace.
Peace is the primary infrastructure for development. Many revolutions in the world have been successful due to peaceful movement. Such as Satyagraha by Gandhi to make India independent from the 200 years old British rule , campaign by Nelson Mandela against apartheid and the Civil rights movement in America by Martin Luther King Jr. to secure the rights of the blacks. These peaceful revolutions helped to establish peace in the respective nations which was the base for its overall social and economic development.
Throughout the history of this world peace has triumph against all the odds. Worldwide organization such as The United Nations (UN) was founded in 1945 after World War II to stop wars and advocate world peace.
The Middle East nations, Syria, Afghanistan, Pakistan, etc are the victims of civil war and terrorism. Nowadays we even hear news about frequent terrorist attacks in some European and American cities. These all kinds of violence in the world are due to the absence of peace in their mind and heart.
Nepal was also the victim of the ten year long Maoist insurgency. The dark time of insurgency has passed but the wounds are still fresh. Citizens of Nepal are fighting with their own brothers and sisters, trying to divide their own country. If this situation continues, we no longer will be able to call our country, the birthplace of Gautama Buddha and our future generation will no longer get to live in this beautiful country which embraces diversity.
